Booking your ride,

You may contact us by e-mail, phone or via the electronic form found on this website. When booking your ride you will be asked about your previous riding experience – please be honest in reporting this. Please also notify us beforehand if you have a condition or illness that your riding instructor should know about. Horseback riding is not suitable for persons with strong allergies or for someone with a fear of animals.

Cancellations must be made minimum 24 hours before the ride. All activities are organized according to advance bookings.

On behalf of Kainuun Vaellustalli the ride may be cancelled due to following reasons:

  • strong wind/storm/thunder or temperatures below -20 C (or over +25 C)
  • dangerously icy riding surfaces
  • an emergency concerning the health of a horse or of the instructor

The rides are organized according to skill levels. We will not allow a beginner level customer to attend a ride meant for experienced riders. Do not give false information about your skills.

All participants must be physically fit enough for participating. If you have certain mobility issues (f.ex. very tight hip flexors) riding is not recommended. Persons under the influence of intoxicants or otherwise behaving inappropriately will not be allowed to attend. Riding while you are pregnant is not possible at Kainuun Vaellustalli.

The age limit for trail riding is 10-12 years depending on skill level. The rider weight limit is 70-85 kg (and height limit 185 cm) depending on the horse – our Icelandic horses are pony sized. Temperature limit for winter riding is -20 degree Celsius. In the summertime temperatures over +25 Celsius may cause a cancellation of the trip.

We plan all our activities with an emphasis on safety and withhold the right to discontinue the ride should the safety of the customer and/or horse so require. If the discontinuation is due to a customer’s disregard for given instructions the price of the ride will not be compensated to the customer in question.

Skill levels

Novice No previous experience necessary. You may have tried horseback riding one or a few times and/or you have never received riding lessons. On this level we will ride in walk. Age limit 12 years.

Beginner You ride at a riding school but haven’t yet finished your beginner course or you have not done horseback riding actively in many years. On this level we will ride walk, and if the participants are up to it, trot and tölt. Age limit 12 years.

Intermediate (and up) On this level you are able to ride an experienced horse in all the gaits: you can do rising trot, you know how to do a half-halt and know how to take up canter and slow down from canter in a controlled way. You are currently taking riding lessons, or have recently had riding lessons for quite some time. With intermediate and experienced groups we will ride walk, trot, tölt and canter. Age limit 10 years.

Payment methods

We accept cash and common credit cards.

Our customers are not insured for accidents – please make sure your own insurances are up to date.

Equipment and clothing

Each rider must wear a riding helmet on horseback. We still have some helmets and riding gloves available for you to loan but no boots (we are preparing for closing down business and lots of riding gear has already been sold). Please take your own boots/shoes with heels with you for riding. Slacks or pants without heavy seams and a light jacket are suitable for clothing. Please contact us if you need advice on what to wear.

You can use your own riding gear but it must be washed in 60 degree Celsius or disinfected if it has been used elsewhere. You can disinfect your own helmet & boots upon arrival if you like, just inform us beforehand should you need the disinfectant.

Extra items or back bags are not allowed on the rides. If you need a bag for carrying medication etc. please ask your instructor to give you one. You may take your mobile phone with you on silent mode. If you would like to take photos during the ride please mention this to your instructor.

General instructions

The tightness of the girth and the length of the stirrups will be checked for everyone before heading off. We will also instruct you on the correct way of mounting (no kicking the horse’s sides or falling down in the saddle heavily) so please wait until you are given the permission to mount.

In the forest everyone must stay in line riding on the place designated for you by your instructor (overtaking another rider in the line is forbidden). You may encounter wild animals, for example deer, in the forest but our horses are used to them. Listen carefully to what your instructor says and have a wonderful ride!
